JOSEPH B. BRUNS

Joe Bruns

Joseph B. Bruns, executive vice president and chief operating officer, has more than 35 years' experience in management, with almost 25 years spent in the broadcasting industry. Bruns oversees the management of WETA's daily operations.

Prior to joining WETA in 2001, Bruns was chief administrative officer and chief financial officer for public broadcaster KQED in San Francisco for three years. In that position, he oversaw financial, information technology, human resource, and building and administrative areas. During his tenure at KQED, he led the station's significant growth in financial strength and the planning for its conversion to digital broadcasting and production systems.

In the mid-eighties he worked with the United States Information Agency, first as the director of administration for the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, then as director of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program and Hubert Humphrey Fellowship programs, and finally as director of personnel policy. Bruns held senior positions with Voice of America for six years starting in 1988, serving as acting director from 1993 to 1994 after having been chief of staff and deputy director. Bruns then became director of International Broadcasting, with oversight of Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio and TV Marti and WorldNet Television. He has also held positions with the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Department of the Navy and the U.S. Public Health Service. Bruns served in the United States Navy in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969.
