Evgeny Kissin, piano
An Evening of Jewish Music and Poetry
Monday, May 4, 2015 - 9:00pm
"I wish this concert had been recorded," wrote Washington Post critic Anne Midgette following Evgeny Kissin's performance of "An Evening of Jewish Music and Poetry" at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. Fortunately the February 2014 program has been recorded (by Classical WETA's Charles Lawson) and we will thus be able to enjoy this unique and deeply personaly concert on Front Row Washington. A co-production of Pro Musica Hebraica and the Kennedy Center, this concert features rare solo piano works by early twentieth-century Jewish composers inspired by traditional Jewish music, including Ernest Bloch's magnificent 1935 Piano Sonata, the Sonata No.2 by Alexander Veprik and Alexander Krein's Suite Dansée. In addition, Mr. Kissin recites personally selected Yiddish poetry of uncommon depth and beauty by Naim Bialik and Isaac Peretz. (Translations are available at promusicahebraica.org)
Anne Midgette: "It takes a different kind of virtuosity to play musical pieces and declaim poems in Yiddish entirely from memory, all with equal mastery....it is an evening I will remember all my life."
Ernest Bloch: Piano Sonata, Op.40 (1935)
Poems of Haim Nachman Bialik
Alexander Veprik: Piano Sonata No.2 (1924)
Poems of Isaac Leybush Peretz
Alexander Abramovich Krein: Suite dansee, Op.44 (1928)
Poem of Yankev Glatshteyn
