An Amadeus Affair

Steinway & Sons 30022

Anderson and Roe have, as a duo, been Steinway artists since 2008; they have been changing the face of classical piano nearly since they first met on the first day of classes at Juilliard in 2000.  Their playing has had audiences “swept into a cheering mass of humanity” and erupting “like Vesuvius…with one massive cheer;” “the high spirits of the audience had more than taken flight, and was already out of this world. Testament to the popularity of Anderson and Roe: the line for their autographs was longer than that for Lang Lang's.”

Critics have been brought to new heights of eloquence:  “…all the flamboyance, adrenaline and infectious passion that youth and virtuosity could muster…” “They breathed as one … an almost telepathic understanding of each other’s musicianship and an outrageous and transcendental technique…” “…there is an overriding joy in their music-making. Couple that with incredible technical abilities, ensemble second to none, and, in their videos, a true sense of theatrical entertainment, and you have a positive look at the future of classical music performance. They do have it all, and any classical music lover owes it to himself to hear Anderson & Roe.”

The sensuality of four-hand piano playing is strongly emphasized in their performances.  One critic noted that their playing “…can only be described as lovemaking on a piano keyboard.  Who knew duo piano playing could be so sexy?”  “Racing heartbeats, intense eye contact, physical friction, a charged chemistry, and an element of danger…” Says Anderson, “Most people's first impression of the genre is that it is "quaint"... so when I describe us to non-musicians, I say we're in a piano duo and our concerts are adrenalized and sexual.  Gotta spice it up to counter that first reaction to the genre…”  The pair are frequently assumed to be married.  Greg married his husband in 2010, and Liz is unattached.

Their thrilling performances can be seen on their many videos, most of which were produced by Anderson.  As they note on their website, their mission statement is: “To make classical music a relevant and powerful force in society. To connect with others; to engage, provoke, illuminate; to serve as a conduit for the composer's voice; to express our inner lives; to share the joy and fulfillment that only music can elicit.  To free the world from the constraints of sleep-inducing concerts.”

Anderson and Roe deliver all this and more in their Mozart album, An Amadeus Affair, which brings our celebration of Mozart Month to a close.  Mozart’s 259th birthday anniversary is on Tuesday January 27.  Join us throughout the week for the sensational playing of Anderson and Roe.
