There’s a treasure trove of Vivaldi manuscripts, in fact the composer’s own private library of scores, in the National University Library in Turin, and the Naïve label joined with Italian musicologist Alberto Basso (of the Istituto per I Beni Musicali in Piemonte) to create the Vivaldi Edition project, based on the scores. Among the goals of the project is to record hundreds of the 450-plus works in the collection, many of those being recorded for the first time.  The Vivaldi Edition, according to the plan, will release over 100 recordings, to be completed by 2015.

This week’s CD Pick on Classical WETA is Volume 2 of Vivaldi bassoon concertos, just released late last year.  Once again, bassoonist Sergio Azzolini directs vivacious performances with L’Aura Soave Cremona.  The group was founded in 1995 by lutenist and musicologist Diego Cantalupi, who created the performing editions of the seven bassoon concertos on this recording.
