Thirty years ago, pianist Rudolf Buchbinder went into a studio and recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas. Now age 65, Buchbinder has just released a new recording of all 32 Beethoven sonatas, but this time, pressed from live performances at the Dresden Semperoper. The 9-CD box set on the SONY CLASSICAL label is our CD Pick of the Week starting December 26, 2012. Classical WETA senior producer Deborah Lamberton spoke with Rudolf Buchbinder about why he prefers live performance CDs to studio recordings, as well as why he owns over three dozen printed editions of the Beethoven sonatas.
