Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

The Metropolitan Opera

Saturday, April 18, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

Dmitri Shostakovich

Conductor:

James Conlon

Shostakovich’s towering tragedy of adultery and murder stars the commanding dramatic soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as the heroine who suffers the vicissitudes of her treachery. Brandon Jovanovich is her co-conspirator and lover, and James Conlon conducts.

Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role "brings aching vulnerability and delicate singing to her overwhelming performance." Brandon Jovanovich "is ideal as Sergei. His singing is bright and virile, and he is dramatically fearless." James Conlon draws an "inspired, incisive and colorful performance... from the great Met Orchestra." (New York Times)

A "brilliant production, cleverly conceived and imaginatively focused... The splendid cast was properly dominated by Eva-Maria Westbroek, dramatically uninhibited, emotionally wide-ranging... Brandon Jovanovich conveyed the lust and languor of her sometime lover, Sergei, with savage bravado... James Conlon brilliantly juggled passion and pathos, tragedy and satire in the pit... Five stars." (Financial Times)

"Completely engrossing... Westbroek was supported by a cast that was superb from top to bottom." (New York Classical Review)

Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci

The Metropolitan Opera

Saturday, April 25, 2015 - 12:30pm

Composer:

Pietro Mascagni / Ruggero Leoncavallo

Conductor:

Fabio Luisi

Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar (Giulio Cesare, Maria Stuarda, Il Trovatore), who sets the verismo action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian setting. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria Rusticana, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci. Eva-Maria Westbroek (Cav) and Patricia Racette (Pag) are the unlucky heroines, and George Gagnidze sings both Alfio and Tonio. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.
