The Capulets and the Montagues

The Capulets and the Montagues

La Fenice Orchestra

Saturday, May 23, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

VINCENZO BELLINI

Conductor:

Omer Meir Welber

Bellini's take on the Romeo and Juliet story is unusual in that it's not primarily based on Shakespeare's tragedy, instead deriving from an Italian novella. It was a runaway hit at its premiere, causing Bellini to dub the drama "Zaira's revenge," as much of its music was recycled from his opera Zaira, which had failed less than a year earlier.

The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman

Royal Opera Orchestra and Chorus

Saturday, May 30, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

Richard Wagner

Conductor:

Andris Nelsons

While weighing in at about two-and-a-half hours -- without an intermission! -- Dutchman may still be Wagner's most straightforward and approachable opera. It's a stormy drama of legendary determination, undeniable love and ultimate redemption.

La Juive

La Juive

Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus

Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

FROMENTAL HALÉVY

Conductor:

Simone Young

The first of this quarter's three shows from Vienna, Halévy's drama premiered at theParis Opéra in 1835 in what may then have been the most extravagant opera production in history, complete with lavish, period costuming and a phalanx of onstage equestrians.

Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus

Saturday, May 16, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

OTTO NICOLAI

Conductor:

Christian Zacharias

Successful Shakespeare-based operas are few and far between, and this gem is often overlooked. Using the same story that later inspired Verdi's Falstaff, Nicolai's colorful score combines the sparkle of Italian opera with the budding style of German romanticism.

The Rake's Progress

The Rake's Progress

The Metropolitan Opera

Saturday, May 9, 2015 - 1:00pm

Composer:

Igor Stravinsky

Conductor:

James Levine

James Levine revisits one of his favorite 20th-century classics: Stravinsky’s only full-length opera, with its wondrous neo-classical score, back on the Met stage for the first time in 12 years. Paul Appleby adds another leading role as Tom Rakewell, opposite Layla Claire as Anne Trulove, Stephanie Blythe as the bearded lady Baba the Turk, and Gerald Finley as the devilish Nick Shadow.
