Senator Jeff Sessions

Senator Jeff Sessions

Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama had a distinguished career in law prior to being elected to the Senate. Appointed by President Reagan in 1981, he served as a United States Attorney as the U.S. Attorney for Alabama’s Southern District for 12 years, and as the Alabama Attorney General for two years.

As a United States senator, Sessions has focused his energies on maintaining a strong military, upholding the rule of law, limiting the role of government, and providing tax relief to stimulate economic growth.

This month, Classical WETA 90.9 FM talked with Senator Sessions about classical music, his likes and interests, and how he divides his time between Washington, D.C. and Alabama.

What is your favorite classical music piece?
Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."

What is your favorite D.C. area restaurant or chef?
Johnny Rockets, downstairs at Union Station.

Which is your favorite local museum?
The Smithsonian's American History Museum. Its collections of inventions and machines highlight the drive of Americans for progress and our belief in a better tomorrow.

Where do you like to go on your day off?
I go to our small family home in the country in Alabama where I grew up, to walk in the woods, cut the grass a bit, and visit the neighbors. One should not forget their roots.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
As my staff knows from driving around Alabama in the summer, a blizzard from Dairy Queen is hard to resist.

Which three people would you most like to have dinner with?
Actually, this wish was fulfilled recently when I dined with Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird and native of Monroeville, Alabama, after President Bush awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Also on my list are Justice Clarence Thomas and General David Petraeus.

What is your favorite sports team?
My Alma Mater, the Huntington College Hawks.

What is your favorite local arts venue?
The National Gallery of Art on the Mall.

What is one thing you'd like everyone to know about your home state?
Alabama continues to attract world class investment and has one of the strongest economies in the nation — our unemployment rate is a full percentage point below the national average. It is fantastic place to do business and raise a family.
