This evening of music features the brilliant French soprano Emmanuelle de Negri, whose recent appearances in Les Arts Florissant’s performances of Atys and The Fairy Queen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music were lauded by the New York Times: “Among the singers, the standouts were Emmanuelle de Negri, who gave a magnificently dark-hued, impassioned” performance. Our chamber program features music by Sébastien le Camus, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Clérambault, Duparc, Fauré and Debussy, evoking the mythical island of Cythère made famous by the painter Watteau in the early 18th century and reflected upon by the poetry of Baudelaire (L’Invitation au Voyage) and his musical contemporaries in the late 19th century.
