Christmas Cabin of Carnaween

ArtSpace Falls Church

Set in the time of the great potato famine, the story follows the journey of Oona Hegarty, a tinker’s daughter who yearns to have a cabin of her own. Her wish would go unfulfilled if it weren’t for the intervention of the wee folk who come to her aid one snowy Christmas Eve on a hillside in Carnaween.

For the past four seasons, audiences have been coming back each year, making it part of their annual holiday celebration, and reveling in the live Irish music that underscores the tale. Drumming with Dishes: Holiday Edition

Join us at the Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, VA for the musical play Drumming with Dishes: Holiday Edition.

What happens when you invite someone very different from you to come over to play?

This gentle, playful adventure celebrates friendship and turning the ordinary into the extraordinary as you never know just what will become a musical instrument next. Pasta box shakers and dishes drumming away with spoons are just some of the friendly surprises that encourage a child's sense of play. And as our heroine empowers her timid friend to create music, we discover just what wonders can be accomplished when we all work together.

The Peacock Room Comes to America: Exhibiting Freer’s Bibles

Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution

In November 1912 museum founder Charles Lang Freer put two rare biblical manuscripts on public view in his Detroit home. This special installation showcases those antique works—a parchment codex of Deuteronomy and Joshua, and the so-called Washington Codex, the third oldest parchment manuscript of the Gospels—in the unexpected setting of James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room. Part of the long-term exhibition The Peacock Room Comes to America, this presentation exemplifies Freer’s cosmopolitan aesthetic philosophy by juxtaposing biblical parchments with ceramics gathered from all over Asia and framed by Whistler’s brilliant blue and gold decorations.

The Street Sense Project: Portraits by Thien-Kim Pham

The Art League Gallery

Artist Thien-Kim Pham captures the emotions and personalities of the many faces who call the streets home in her somber, charcoal drawings on canvas. The Street Sense Project, at The Art League Gallery this December, forces the viewer to contemplate the lives of street workers and dwellers through large-scale portraits.

Pham has experienced the pain of those living on the street within her own family. As a result, she began to build relationships with many street-workers (some homeless, some not), to learn their stories and create their portraits as a way to call attention to the many individuals in this situation.

Gallery Hours:

  • Thursdays 10:00 am-9:00 pm

UMD Wind Orchestra: Turning Points

Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center

Join UMWO for a performance of three works that represent critical points in composition and time.

Schoenberg reacted to the extravagance of late-Romantic music with his Chamber Symphony. Dense and concise, the work points to the future of 20th-century music.

Berlioz departs from his dramatic and theatrical composition style and embraces Classical traditions in his Grande Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale. Millennium Canons, composed in 2000 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts, celebrates the turn of the century.
