Yolanda Frederikse is one of the many Washington area residents whose life was turned upside down by the derecho storm that hit the area in late June. Her artist’s studio in Kensington was completely destroyed, along with artwork for her upcoming exhibition in Silver Spring. Yet not only did she manage to continue with her printmaking as her studio was being restored, she produced more than 30 works for the show. What’s more, she feels that the experience has added a new dimension to her work.
Frederikse is a longtime Kensington resident who has been painting, printmaking and drawing in and around the Washington DC area for nearly 60 years. Her exhibition of prints and watercolors, “Before and After Derecho”, is on at the Washington Printmakers Gallery in Silver Spring from Oct 31-Nov 25. The artist reception on Sat Nov 3 is open to the public from 1 – 4 pm. There will also be a walk-thru by the artist on Sun Nov 11 at 2:30 pm at the gallery. The gallery is located at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, 2nd Floor, 8230 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring. Prints can be viewed online at: http://washingtonprintmakers.com.
