Before the Railway: Trade and the Syrian Hajj in the Ottoman Period

Before mechanized travel, Muslims on the pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca and Medina faced long and arduous journeys. This talk reviews evidence of state investment in the route of the Syrian hajj and explores how the pilgrimage stimulated economic exchange.
