Opening Reception: Thursday, October 24 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. (Artist Talk: 6 p.m.)
Cara Ober, a fixture on the Baltimore art scene with her award-winning local art blog BmoreArt, showcases her work. She layers drawing, painting, and printmaking into mixed media works that reinterpret sentimental imagery. Working in series, she combines culturally mediated imagery from children’s schoolbooks, home décor, historical texts and greeting cards to explore notions of authenticity, appropriation, personal identity and vocabulary.
“My work exploits a range of opposites,” said Ober. “I combine unrelated images and text to form layers of (mis)understanding, reinterpreting sentimental imagery through layers of drawing, painting and printmaking. I employ a collage aesthetic in all my work, although my materials include paint on canvas, collage of paper, gold leaf and a variety of drawing media.”
