"Authors On Deck" - Captured: The Forgotten Men of Guam

As part of the United States Navy Memorial’s “Authors on Deck” book lecture series, editor Linda Goetz Holmes will present, Captured: The Forgotten Men of Guam (Naval Institute Press, 2012). In the book, author Robert Mansell documents the Japanese invasion of the tiny island of Guam- a paradise for US military and civilian employees prior to the Pacific War.

Drawing on interviews with survivors, diaries, and archival records, Mansell documents the mostly unknown story of the American POWs. Slowly starving as laborers for Japanese companies, the men endured horrific hardships, many of which are chronicled in this book for the first time. Also included are moving stories of their liberation, transportation home, and the aftermath of their ordeal, making this book an important addition to World War II history.
