Educators are invited to join WETA TV 26, Thirteen (New York public broadcasting), and the National Museum of American History on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the museum for a free teacher training workshop.

The workshop will introduce the new landmark family history series Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates Jr. In the series, Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. turns to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans – professor and poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, journalist Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, musician Yo-Yo Ma, director Mike Nichols, Her Majesty Queen Noor, television host/heart surgeon Dr. Melmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.
Participants will view clips from the series, tour the project website, engage in a multimedia lesson plan demonstration, receive video and print project resources, and more. The keynote speaker for the training is author Adele Logan Alexander (mother of professor and poet Elizabeth Alexander). Ms. Alexander's books include Homelands and Waterways, Ambiguous Lives: Free Women of Color in Rural Georgia and Parallel Worlds.
