Reviews

After watching Breakfast in Washington I am newly resolved to journey out for farm-fresh eggs in Frederick (at Volt) or out to Herndon for homestyle grub (at Virginia Kitchen), and viewers might be, too, if they set their DVRs and keep a pen and paper handy for reference.
The Washington Post

The makers of this documentary visited more than two dozen restaurants in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Places serving everything from, you know, down-home diner grub to go-getter power breakfasts.
Metro Connection on WAMU

I immediately recognized most of the places featured, but there were a few restaurants that I have never heard of, such as MGM Roast Beef on Brentwood Road, which has been around for 20 years.

Ritz Carlton Brunch - Pentagon City

The Ritz-Carlton has an OUTSTANDING Brunch Buffet Sundays, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This is for more adult taste buds with smoked salmon, beef wellington, plus the normal breakfast fare. IT is a bit pricey, but the impecable service makes this brunch an absolute treat. My husband and I went to stay overnight for our anniversary and the next day happed to be Father's Day. On this occasion, the staff had set up a special buffet for children's taste buds, as well, with delicous items like mac 'n cheese and chicken strips. Adults were nibbling off of this table as well because everything was scruptious! The whole staff was gracious and when they realized it was our anniversary, they brought us a very subtle, but thoughtful dessert with a candle in it representing our 20 years together.

Breakfast with a large side of character

Jimmy T's is a Capitol Hill institution. It's been in a family for two generations and patrons can be found lining up outside the door on Sunday mornings for its simple, "greasy-spoon" fare. It has an old-fashioned counter, pressed tin ceiling, and sassy service. The East Capitol Street neighborhood would not be the same without this throwback to an earlier time.

Here here for Jimmy T's

This is a great place to go and squeeze into a booth with your family and friends.

Bolivian Caranavi organic coffee!

My local co-op had this coffee on a table to introduce it! It was specially priced at $6.50 a pound! I bought one bag, went home and made a pot of coffee, came back and got 6 more bags. I really do like this organic coffee!

"The Bolivia "Colonial Caranavi" coffee is grown at elevations of 4,000 - 6,000 feet in 41 small organic farms. This rare treat is rich and heavy bodied with a pleasant spiciness and mild acidity. " ( from the internet)

Love from a mouse learning to type, with help from my friends Archy and Mehitabel!

(The now classic tale of Archy the cockroach and Mehitabel the cat in her ninth life. First published in 1927, this free verse poem has become an essential part of American literature!) It's at the library!

Mandu Korean Brunch

I love the value and taste of the Korean brunch at Mandu on 18th st. It's a bit like steak and eggs with nice zuchinni hash browns and a bowl of fruit. You can also get a tofu version that is just as tasty.

Bob & Edith's - Columbia Pike Institution

Cheap, simple eats available round the clock. You can't live in Arlington and not try it at least once.

Best Sunday Brunch in VA

Go to Jackson's in Reston. We love the fresh fish and the crab cakes benedict! There a also many excellent brunch cocktails and other excellent brunch entrees.

Tryst for sure

Tryst blows all these other guys out of the water. Found this about them too: http://www.theroastdc.com/tryst.html

Leopold's Kafe in Georgetown

By far, the best place we have eaten breakfast in DC. They are open everyday of the week for breakfast and you can get breakfast until 4pm! Hand made pastries, excellent Julius Meinl Coffee and a beautiful courtyard to top it off.

it is excellent not just for

it is excellent not just for breakfast but Lunch diner and brunch...........Amazing place!!!!

Virginia Kitchen

Great group of people work here! The food is good and we always find at least one weekend special we HAVE to try. We are here at least one morning every weekened.

FABULOUS BREAKFASTS!

We have been coming to this place for 20+ years and won't go anywhere else for breakfast! It's become a ritual for our family. The prices are a good value, the food is always fresh and tasty. . .the bacon iand sausage are supreme, the pancakes are awesome, the daily specials are creative and always worth considering. The decor is homey, the owner is friendly beyond belief for someone so incredibly busy, the staff are always accommodating, and the orange juice is freshly squeezed. Their breakfasts are our favorite meals of the day, need we say more?!!! Run don't walk to Virginia Kitchen and do the same on the way home to rid yourself of the calories. It's ALLLLLL JUST FAN-TAB-ULOUS!

Virginia Kitchen

Fabulous customer service, great food, very high recommendation. We've been customers forever, and the owners are the best! Love everything about Country Kitchen.

Silver Spring Takes the Cake...er uh the Waffle

The General Store has Sunday breakfast with waffles and best un-ordinary toppings.
Lately featured on the Food Channel, it's a one-of-a-kind find in the DC area.

Silver Spring/Country Store

Didn't this place close recently?

Pete's

Pete's on Capitol Hill (1st St SE between Capitol South Metro and the Capitol) opens VERY EARLY and is the venue of choice for everyone from security guards to senators. Fits everyone's budget and food preference.

Pete's

Pete's Diner is actually on 2nd ST SE and is a true institution - good breakfast too

OLD EBBITT GRILL

My vote for best breakfast in DC is the Old Ebbitt Grill which is open for breakfast at 7:30 each morning. It is a great place to stop for a moderately priced power breakfast if you are down by the White House. They also have carry out available at the Ebbitt Express.

Mosaic Cuisine, Rockville

Consider Mosaic Cuisine in Rockville for an impressive breakfast, lunch and dinner. Home of the only waffle sandwiches I know of in the area, they make extraordinary food. Very diverse cuisine, too. If you've never heard of them before, do a search for "Mosaic" @ WashingtonPost.com for a recent review - highly rated.

Thank you

On behalf of all the incredible great people working at Mosaic Cuisine and Cafe, Thank you so much for these wonderful words.
Thierry Jugnet

Great show!

Enjoyed seeing the Mosaic segment last night, especially seeing our own "shining faces" on TV, if only for about 2 seconds! Though some of those other places looked interesting, they won't lure us away from Mosaic!
Hope you get some new customers today, because once they come they will want to come back!

Virginia Kitchen = THE BEST!

If "The Kitchen" isn't on your breakfast rotation, it should be. This place is great!

Swings is the best!

Swings is the best coffee by far! The roaster is very knowledgable about his coffee.

Swings coffee

I love Swings Coffe!! It is always fresh and never tastes "burned" no matter what time of day you buy it!!!

Sidamo's

I have to give a shout out for Sidamo's on H street: I think this HAS to be the best coffee place in DC. I work near Swings and love it, but Sidamo's is in another league in its quality of coffee. Please add it to the list to be voted on for best morning coffee!

M. E. Swing Coffee

Their coffee is the best I have ever tasted. It beats Starbucks and Caribou in my opinion. My only pet peeve is the long line waiting for this great tasting coffee! I wish it was kept secret and low profile so I could get my coffee quick! They should open up more of this coffee shops elsewhere! Starbucks and Caribou will be in trouble if this happens!

Best Coffee Ever

I have to say this place has the best coffee ever, and exceptional customer service.

Breakfest in Washington

I have always enjoyed your shows espcially the one on Crab Cakes in Md. The breakfest was good but how could you not include The Tastee Diner...a landmark since 1935 in our area with 3 locations and have served millions of Washingtonians. You also did not include Billy Martin's Tavern who has served Presidents and commoners in Georgetown since the 50's. They serve breakfest on Saturdays and Sundays and in Olde Towne Gaithersburg there is a throwback luncheonette in a Pharmacy called The Old Town Cafe. Next time email me I know every joint in town.

Peregrine Espresso-Capitol Hill 6th&PaAveSE-The Best Coffee inDC

The Best Coffee in DC! Try the Latte.

Cafe Atlantico

The head chef at this restaurant has changed. The meal we had was one of the worst I have ever had.
The guacamole was pretty fresh, but nothing special. I won't even discuss the rest of the meal; except that my husband had to send back his fish (not fresh) and he has never sent a meal back anywhere.

TEAISM IN VARIOUS LOCATION - DUPONT THE BEST

Very good breakfast and good menu accompanied by great variety of teas.

Cafe Aurorusa

I visited Cafe Aurorusa (50 South Picket Street, Unit 24, in Alexandria, Virginia) this morning (Tuesday, March 29, 2011) unannounced, at about 45 minutes prior to the scheduled opening of the restaurant (the glass door to the restaurant indicated that normal business hours were from from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily). Not aware at the time that it was only 8:15 a.m. when I walked-into the restaurant, I noticed that the owners, Dahab Beyene and her husband were inside, preparing the restaurant for another day. I began searching for a table when Dahab introduced herself and personally-welcomed me in. Dahab permitted me to sit at a table of my choosing where we later began to talk, among other things, about the her homeland in Africa. After perusing the menu I ordered a delicious Cappuccino Viennese, followed by a scrumptious Belgian Waffle (homemade recipe, no less), topped-off with vanilla ice cream. I was so enamored with the food, ambiance, and hospitality, that upon finishing my meal I took a very important call on my mobile phone, stood-up from my chair, and subsequently rushed-out the door without paying the bill. Anyway, I highly-recommend Cafe Aurorusa to anyone interested in trying very fine, Italian-influenced Ethiopian-style, fare. I would be happy to write more about my experience, but I need to get off the e-mail, call the owners to apologize, and pay my bill. After all, I'd like to visit Cafe Aurorusa again sometime soon, and I certainly don't want the owners to be upset with me.

Really, you rushed out

Really, you rushed out without paying the bill??? Hopefully you didn't get in your car and drive while on this "very important call", but it sounds like you posted your reply from behind the wheel. Sheesh!

georgetown cafe

When I was in the city I used to love breakfast at georgetown cafe. they're open 24 hours and the food is good, the atmosphere warm.
My other fave for breakfast is good french bread with butter, always a good bet with coffee.
