What Pain, What Joy: Schoenberg, Strauss, Korngold

On Saturday, April 20, IBIS Chamber Music will be joined by internationally acclaimed soprano Wendy Waller for an unforgettable evening of music making. The sumptuously appointed ballroom of Dupont Circle’s Belmont Mansion will be the perfect setting for works from early 20th century Viennese and German masters. The program, “What Pain, What Joy, ” considers themes of betrayal and redemption, love and loss, music and poetry. Original arrangements (for harp, strings and soprano) of Marietta’s Lied from Korngold’s opera Die Tote Stadt, and the Finale from Strauss’s Capriccio will be performed, along with Schoenberg’s seminal Verklärte Nacht, and the opening string sextet from Capriccio.

This concert benefits MusiCorps, praised by the Wall Street Journal as “a revolutionary program to help war veterans adjust to postwar life” through music. A champagne reception follows.
