Defending the Old Dominion: Virginia and its Militia in the War of 1812 by Stuart Butler

Author and archivist Stuart Butler will discuss the historic events in Virginia during the War of 1812, and examine how Virginia’s militia was organized and supplied by the Commonwealth, and its ability to defend the state against British incursions. Included in his discussion is the story of how nearly two thousand former slaves joined the British to fight in Virginia with the British forces. A book signing will follow the program.
