NSO Showcase: From London to Leningrad

The May program opens with Ralph Vaughan Williams' A London Symphony, which depicts various London scenes, including the Westminster chimes, the street cries of flower sellers, and the rustling of the Thames. It also features Shostakovich's 5th Symphony, a piece composed in 1937 which appears to toe the party line while simultaneously communicating with audiences traumatized by Stalin's brutality.
