James Jacobs came to Classical WETA from WGBH in Boston, where he spent five years as a full-time host and producer. He previously worked for WNYC and WNYE in New York, and has produced programs that have been heard throughout the country via Public Radio International.
James came to radio through his devotion to music. In a professional capacity he has composed scores for dance, theater, and television, conducted instrumental and vocal ensembles, and played cello, recorder and double bass, making appearances on Prairie Home Companion and Saturday Night Live as well as on the soundtracks of feature films.
He is also a dedicated music teacher, and commutes every week between DC and New York, where he is employed by Midori & Friends as a resident artist in a public arts high school in the Bronx. Last summer he served as a coach for Act Too Studios, an opera workshop for teens in Western Massachusetts.
James’s other passions include food and writing, which he recently combined when putting together a Thanksgiving playlist for the Washington Post. He has also authored many concert program notes and liner notes for recordings.
James can be heard Saturday nights on Classical WETA.
